Meticuly and Siriraj Hospital unveil world’s first titanium 3D printing system to manufacture regulatory-compliant implants at point-of-care

Updated: Aug 16

24th June 2024, Bangkok, Thailand - Meticuly and Siriraj Hospital announce partnership to install a cutting-edge 3D printing system. This automated system can design, manufacture, and deliver regulatory-compliant, patient-specific implants within 1-7 days, offering one of the industry’s fastest turnaround times. Personalised implants provide numerous clinical benefits, including improved fit, reduced complications, less blood loss, faster recovery, and better overall patient outcomes. Siriraj Hospital, along with Golden Jubilee Medical Center, will become the first institution globally to offer 3D-printed titanium solutions directly at the point-of-care.

OSS3O, a subsidiary of the Meticuly-Siriraj joint venture, has secured financial backing from MK Group to unite three key players in a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU):

First Siriraj Hospital, Thailand's largest public teaching hospital. Secondly Meticuly, developer of the groundbreaking 3D printing system, contributing extensive clinical experience and maintaining a proven track record of regulatory compliance to standards like the EU-MDR and US-FDA. Finally, the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMU-C), a Royal Thai government agency that enhances national competitiveness by supporting innovative projects with high potential for global impact.

The centrepiece of this collaboration is the Vulcan Box, a point-of-care 3D printing solution that adheres to stringent Quality Management System (QMS) standards. The Vulcan Box establishes a new paradigm and allows hospitals to co-design and 3D print titanium implants directly on-site. This eliminates the need for online consultations, lengthy procurement and delivery processes, allowing for faster and more customised surgical procedures, ultimately benefiting patients. Hospitals worldwide equipped with the Vulcan Box will benefit from on-demand implant production, eliminating logistical delays and risks. The Vulcan Box is versatile enough to fit into various hospital spaces or be deployed as a container-sized unit. Additionally, the data-driven manufacturing process optimises 3D printing for minimal material waste and guarantees high-quality outcomes.

“We are the most referenced medical institute of the nation,” said Dr. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D. Dean, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, talking about the significance of this project. In addition he stated, “This MoU will not be just a piece of paper. It is part of our continual promise to bridge the healthcare accessibility gap, and make a difference for the people of Thailand who need it the most.”

Joining the ceremony, Mr. Paiboon Jirojkul, who regained his ability to walk thanks to Meticuly’s hip reconstruction implant, serves as a living example of the new standard of healthcare. Prof. Dr. Keerati Charoencholvanich, Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Siriraj Hospital remarked, “Meticuly’s personalised titanium innovation is one that we proudly use. The patients who are going to benefit the most are the elderly and fragile, where treatment options are limited.”

“With the Vulcan Box, we are leveraging our years of existing expertise in Generative AI design engines and AI-assisted lean manufacturing of medical implants to push the envelope for development at point-of-care. This next-generation manufacturing system is designed specifically for 3D printing implants in the hospital environment, placing our powerful technology directly where it will benefit surgeons and patients the most.” said Dr. Boonrat Lohwongwatana, CEO of Meticuly.

A Legacy of Excellence: Siriraj Hospital

Siriraj Hospital, a name synonymous with Thai healthcare excellence, holds the distinction of being the country’s oldest and largest hospital. As a hub for innovative treatments, the Golden Jubilee Medical Center perfectly embodies Siriraj's dedication to nurture a culture of progress within its healthcare network. Its cutting-edge facilities and renowned medical team create the ideal environment for the Vulcan Box’s success. This partnership will not only advance patient care but also serve as a launchpad for the future of personalised medicine.

Meticuly and Siriraj Hospital have achieved a groundbreaking milestone by unveiling the world’s first 3D printing system for manufacturing regulatory-compliant implants directly at the point-of-care. This revolutionary system allows for patient-specific implants to be designed, produced, and delivered within days, significantly improving clinical outcomes through personalized care. The partnership between Meticuly and Siriraj not only ensures faster recovery for patients but also sets a new global standard for healthcare technology. This innovative approach reflects the broader emphasis on personalized care in healthcare, much like the benefits of Essiac Tea, which can be explored on fulvic acid minerals that offers health benefits that support holistic well-being, complementing cutting-edge medical treatments by helping individuals maintain balance and health throughout their recovery.
