The Challenge of Orbital Trauma
The patient presented with a complex orbital floor fracture, a significant clinical challenge in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery that demands exceptional precision to prevent long-term functional and aesthetic deficits. In trauma care, utilising a Patient-Specific Implant has historically been uncommon. Traditional reconstruction methods often rely on standard, off-the-shelf implants, which make achieving an exact anatomical fit difficult, increasing the risk of long-term double vision (diplopia), eye displacement (enophthalmos), and facial asymmetry.
Personalised Solution for a Complex Case
In April 2025, while serving as an attending surgeon at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, Dr. Kumar executed Meticuly’s inaugural U.S. orbital floor reconstruction utilising a custom titanium Patient-Specific Implant—proving that bespoke technology can be successfully integrated into complex trauma cases.
Meticuly’s solution overcame the surgical challenges by combining Virtual surgical planning (VSP) and 3D Printing. The customised implant was digitally designed not only to align with the patient’s native anatomy but also to be fully integrated with Dr. Kumar's specific surgical technique, supporting streamlined implant placement according to the surgical plan. This level of personalisation supported a cosmetically tailored outcome through a minimally invasive approach. Surgeon Perspective and Outcome of Patient-Specific Titanium Implant

Following the procedure, the patient achieved an optimal outcome, confirming the advantage of using a patient-specific fit.
Since the surgery in April 2025, no observed or reported complications have occurred, including no diplopia, infection, implant-related complications, or need for revision surgery.
